| new wordintrospeculation: making guesses at what's going on in your own mind Been
doing a lot of this lately. What's it all about? Anyway, it
was a nice chuckle. Been so busy these days. Within about a
month, I moved, started a new job, and was in two weddings and provided
a slideshow for a third. Going home to Decatur this weekend. Parents get to meet A2C :) <EOL> | | |
| AAC confusionThere seems to be a lot of confusion around AAC (Advanced Audio Coding). AAC is an audio compression codec. It is similar in nature to MP3. In fact, AAC is the codec used in MPEG-2, the format for DVD movies. It is an unfortunate coincidence that Apple chose to use AAC for it's format of choice for the iPod and iTunes music store. Most people think that AAC is something like "Apple Audio Codec". It isn't. It's a standard from the Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG). This article is just one of the many that perpetuate this confusion. In the text of the article, AAC is described as an Apple proprietary codec, competing with MP3 and Windows Media. Well, MP3 and AAC come from the same standards committe. The most proprietary of all systems is Windows Media. This is suspicious that something like this comes from MSNBC, but I'm sure it's just some confusion on the part of the author. Sorry for the rant. <EOL> | | |
| hellboyWell, I got back from seeing Hellboy a little bit ago. I liked it. Of course, I've been a Hellboy Fan since 1994, so I have a pretty good working knowledge of what's going on prior to seeing the film. This is probably the biggest problem. Most people don't know Hellboy, and so it may not appeal to as wide an audience as other comic book translations. Even people who I know are into comics related flicks thought it was just mediocre. One of the biggest drawbacks to a film-about-a-comic book is that you miss a lot of the depth and development. Daredevil handled this in a way that was very disjoint to many viewers, but to me, it seemed the norm. In Hellboy, we get a good backdrop of the main characer's origins, and the seeds to the plot. I think the biggest drawback was the amazing multiplying demon dogs. Yeesh. Fighting a few was okay, but I think better villains and henchmen could've been conjured up. For me, that was the weakest part of the movie, as the acting was pretty good (Ron Perlman was born to be Hellboy), and the SFX were cool. I think some of the darkness of the comics were lost in translation, but overall, it kept the spirit of the comics very well. I'd give this a 7 out of 10 in my book. <EOL> | | |
| first day offSo, after 7 years of working for the man, I've got some downtime before starting my new job. Unfortunately, I've got a packed week. I have to work on a presentation for the Arts retreat, organize some missionaries going to Germany in a few weeks, and figure out what's going on with my new house (I still haven't moved in yet). I have to start packing up all my junk in anticipation of the move. Oy! Some downtime, eh? We went to go see the Cherry Blossoms yesterday at Branch Brook park in Newark. Very cool. I've never gone to see them, but have always wanted to. So A2C and Dan and Soph and I got in the car and headed out. Later, we decided to get some dinner in Montclair. I love Montclair! We ate at Taro (ecclectic asian- haha!) with the 4 of us plus Ken and Fonda. It was a good, relaxing time with friends. So, anyway, got to get on a call with the Germany team. <EOL> | | |
